Dante finds himself lost in a gloomy wood, from Canto 1 of the Divine Comedy: Inferno illustrated by Gustave Doré (1832-1883). The caption reads ‘In the midway of this our mortal life, I found me in a gloomy wood, astray’
I read all of the divine comedy nonstop one summer in high school and it changed my life forever. that line is one of my favorites.
